As the 1st inaugural European Basketball Association came to a close it came down to Panathinaikos and Lietuvos Rytas in the EBA finals. Sarunas Jasikevicius proved his worth in the end being named the finals MVP. The season couldn’t have been more exciting Martynas Gecivicius being the unanimous Rookie of the Year and Jasikevicius being named the regular season MVP as well.
With Europeans going as high as #9 (Luka Bogdanovic) the 2008 NBA Draft was filled with European talent. Most of the 2nd round was filled with teams willing to draft a European prospects and let them remain overseas to continue to develop their games. Some of those names include Danillo Gallinari, Nikola Pekovic, and Rudy Fernandez. However some players have been bought out and have agreed to make the jump including All-Stars Mario Kasun and Fran Vasquez from AXA FC Barcelona and 2nd round picks Larry Ayuso from Cibona and Brion Rush from Lietuvos Rytas.

As the 2008 EBA Draft came to a close, we had some potentially terrible picks and some potential steals. Stanko Barac highly regarded as a solid post player and career starter went at #20 to FC Kaiserslautern and should fill a need immediately. Williams Rupp the outstanding offensive prospect went #9 in what could be a potentially great pick for a team in need of scoring from the outside. There were also a few surprise picks as Dragan Labovic fell down the board to the latter part of the 1st round. Yaroslav Korolev was a surprise pick going #5 although he will fill a position of need, yet the pick could have yielded a potential star in the future.
This season there is a solid crop of free agents. Aside from the available NBA free agents that are willing to come over, there seems to be plenty of talent left in the EBA free agent pool. Surprisingly Shawn Jenkins from FC Kaiserslautern resigned with his current club becoming one of the higher paid players in the EBA. Players like Nikola Velickovic will be looking for a solid payday, yet some teams may be weary to sign him as his rights are already owned by an NBA team and has a MAX of 2 years remaining overseas.
